S-Video Interface

This standard was introduced to help in two ways. The first is to reduce the crosstalk between the luminance and chrominance signals. The second is to increase the luminance bandwidth capability of the TV by eliminating the need for a low pass filter in the luminance path.

This is achieved by carrying the luminance and chrominance signals separately on the connector between the video recorder and the TV. Thus, as they are never in a composite state, cross-luminance crawling dots on the vertical edges of a highly coloured area don't appear and cross-colour strobing doesn't show up on tweed jackets. Also there's no need for a filter in the luminance chain in the TV to get rid of the chrominance signal, so increasing the horizontal resolution (bandwidth). Of course the resolution is still limited by the tube, but it does make an improvement.

S-Video signals can also be carried on the SCART connector.
